Cunniff Elementary School Newsletter

A Note from Ms. MacEwan

Dear Cunniff Families,

We have had an absolutely WONDERFUL first week of school at the Cunniff! Our students are diving into their routines, and are all so much taller than we remember 😊. Our Kindergarten students have also had a wonderful first two full days (though we know we are sending home some tuckered out kids!).

You may have heard from your child(ren) that we had been planning for our first fire drill this week. We are required to have four fire drills each year, and typically have one in the first or second week of school. Since the drill did not happen this week, we do anticipate it for next week. Teachers have been talking with students about this, and practicing calm, safe evacuations from the building.  We are not informed ahead of time when these drills will take place, which is exactly why we practice - so that we are ready for the unexpected.

Starting on Monday, September 14th, our Facility Dog (Bowie) will be joining us on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. He has had a great summer, and is ready to get back to work!

We are also looking forward to welcoming our Pre-K students next week, with visiting appointments on Monday, and a half day (only for Pre-K) on Tuesday!

We have several updates for you in this week's newsletter, so please read through and send any questions my way.

Warmly,

Julia MacEwan
Principal

Personal Electronic Devices

Update on Personal Electronic Devices:
This past spring, the Watertown School Committee (along with many other districts across the state) passed a policy restricting the use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones and smart watches, during the school day. If students have devices, they should be kept at home or in their backpacks. If students are carrying or wearing devices, they will be asked to turn them in for the day. The full policy can be viewed here.

Cunniff School Site Council

We are inviting parents, caregivers, teachers, and community members to become part of the Cunniff School Site Council (SSC). The SSC is a representative, school-based committee that works collaboratively with the principal to identify school needs, review student achievement information, and develop and monitor the School Improvement Plan. Members help shape priorities related to teaching and learning, family engagement, professional development, school climate, and the overall success of our students.

Serving on the SSC is a meaningful opportunity to share your perspective, learn more about our school, and help guide Cunniff’s continued growth. We value a council that reflects the diversity, experiences, and voices of our entire school community.

If you are interested in serving on the Cunniff School Site Council, please contact me. We would be delighted to welcome your participation. Together, we can continue building a school community where every student and family experiences belonging, commitment, and growth. We will hold elections for participation on the SSC during our October 6th PTO meeting.

Our meetings will take place via Google Meet at 7:30am on the 3rd Thursday of each month, starting on October 15th.
