A Note from Ms. MacEwan
Dear Cunniff Families,

Happy Pi Day! We have been celebrating with circular treats, Pi competitions, and general math excitement.

Next Friday, March 21, we will be recognizing World Down Syndrome Day by inviting our entire community to ROCK YOUR SOCKS!

World Down Syndrome Day is recognized on March 21 (3/21) to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down Syndrome.

Why do we rock our socks?
Chromosomes are the building blocks of life itself and look like socks, so since people with
Down Syndrome have an extra “sock,” people all over the world wear colorful, fun, or
mismatched socks to raise awareness and support for inclusion and respect for people with Down Syndrome.
Down Syndrome Facts:
• Down Syndrome is not a disease or illness, it is simply an EXTRA chromosome within
every living cell.
• No one knows why some people have this extra chromosome.
• People are born with Down Syndrome and will have Down Syndrome their entire lives.
• Most children with Down Syndrome will be able to do the things that other children do,
it just may take more time, focus, and work.
• Children with Down Syndrome like to play and have fun and friends, as do all children.
• Children with Down Syndrome have different talents, interests, and ability levels.
• Children with Down Syndrome want to be included, liked, and respected, as do all
children.
“ROCK YOUR SOCKS” is a celebration of everything that makes all of us different and special,
but also the SAME.
Let us “ROCK OUR SOCKS” Cunniff Cougars!

Have a wonderful weekend, and please read on for more important Cunniff info.
